Brake rotors are an important safety part of your vehicle and as such quality is important. At EBC we have worked hard to design, produce research, and test all types of materials to bring you the very best in this safety critical part.

As you read this article, EBC is finalising its work to approve all of its brake rotors to the new and very demanding ECE R90 brake safety regulations, all products have passed the gruelling tests and the paperwork is being finalised. The product has not changed, it has always been this exact product but confirmation of this quality will soon be visible on the product itself with the R90 accreditation.

EBC rotors are high-quality G3000 grey iron rotor with exactly the same material and specification as the rotors fitted to your car and largely from the same facilities as the manufacturers. Now R90 approved, unlike most of our competitors EBC discs are the highest quality rotors that you can buy.

Statement of origin – EBC Brakes still manufactures a high proportion of its rotor range quality approved facilities in the UK or in Italy but like every supplier some Asian supplies are the only way to go. There are no other choices and any supplier that tells you otherwise is “painting you a picture” to say it politely. To be frank, it’s not the fact that a product comes from Asia so much as it is which factory it comes from, the quality and control practices they operate under, and how you monitor their supplies.

EBC not only have R90 approved outside suppliers but they do secondary testing on ALL incoming batches ranging from basic dimensional tests to metallurgy, balance, and even X-Ray inspection. EBC also runs destructive dynamometer tests on samples from batches and uses our own discs for the daily disc pad control testing on one of our 7 dynamometers both in the UK and in the USA, pushing discs to glow red heat daily. This in itself is an ongoing tough test of quality. If anything were wrong, we would soon know about it.

With all our in-house manufacturing of pads and its rigorous quality control on discs, EBC is totally in control of the products it sells, unlike many of our competitors who pop things in a glossy box and stick a label on it.

 

Quality Controls

Many EBC castings are made using tools owned by EBC in European foundries but some have to be outsourced. In such cases, the strictest quality controls are applied to ensure the safety and quality of the parts we sell. We source only the highest quality parts from well-known and proven OEM manufacturer vendors and we are responsible for and guarantee those parts to fit and perform as expected.

All suppliers of castings for the EBC group are ISO approved to the highest specification and have been visited and approved by the German TUV authorities. EBC also visits all foundry suppliers for accreditation and conducts ongoing batch tests for hardness, metallurgy and accuracy on a regular daily basis

EBC then adds value to its products by strictest quality controls and specifications and a 100% run out and dimensional check, including element analysis, surface finish and hardness tests on every batch and runout inspection . All sport rotors are slotted and grooved at the Las Vegas facility of the USA operation or at our new Northampton rotor facility employing 32 staff which has recently been enhanced to have its own QC department, machining and testing facilities and a new Nitrotherm anti corrosion coating plant. We also do all we can to embrace US employment and in our US facilities we employ 14 people in our rotor machining facility alone.

 

Made Using G3000 Cast Iron

EBC Automotive brake rotors are made from G3000 spec cast iron and full specifications and properties can be seen here! Runout figures above this will lead to vibration after 3000 to 4000 miles due to what we call disc thickness variation which is not a warranty condition. So you see this is no cheap import brake disc. These brake discs have the highest integrity and product quality on the aftermarket. An OE quality replacement disc, made of the finest grade iron and a perfect replacement disc for any car.

Every EBC rotor is runout inspected on this machine. Even when manufactured on state of the art precision machines, not even ONE single disc escapes this process guaranteeing perfect disc alignment. If during install you notice runout on your car it will surely be due to a chassis alignment that happens on one in seven cars, usually cased by nudging a kerb or hitting a pothole in the road earlier in driving the vehicle.

- Geometry Issues: 

One in seven cars suffers geometry problems during its life that can affect steering and cause brake vibration. These are NOT a product quality issue! These can happen by simply nudging a kerb or by driving over a pothole. EBC is not alone in recognising this problem but is the only brake supplier on the planet prepared to offer diagnosis and a solutions.

- Installation or hub run-out issues:

These cause what is known as DTV. The videos below show how to correct for brake vibration caused by DTV (Disc thickness variation). DTV develops in a car after 3000-4000 miles caused by runout built in to the car or due to incorrect alignment of the rotors at install. This is quite a common fault on modern cars and many cars require this at every rotor change. drivers also confuse hub distortion with a rotor quality issue but in 99% of cases the dtv is a car problem, not a rotor quality problem. you can replace the rotors as many times as you like trying to solve vibration and the problem will only go away for a few thousand miles and then return. this means you have purchased new rotors in good faith but the problem is not solved and will not go away permanently until you perform this procedure. after this skimming of the rotor surface you will have smooth brakes , more effective brakes and zero vibration. it is even a very worthwhile practice when fitting new rotors to have all four rotors skimmed into perfect alignment on your car with this inexpensive procedure.

- Rotor Distortion:

Rotor distortion due to DTV is very common, in fact one in seven cars has a steering geometry problem either when it is built new or after nudging a kerb or hitting a large pothole. Some drivers still say “My rotors are warped”. Well the engineering facts are rotors do not warp, they are made of cast iron, they are very tough and can be run to red heat and cooled time after time and they will not distort, we do this day in day out on our dynos in the EBC lab. Thats why the whole world still uses cast iron as a vehicle brake rotor material, there has never been anything to beat it and probably never will be.
